Long-distance running is a very lonely sport - it is a sport of endurance, strategy, and persistence. The film touches on long-distance runners’ experiences during a marathon, and how at one point the mind has to push through all adversities and limitations. The journey of Odekta Naibaho started in a family with humble beginnings, with tough experiences that forced her to question: “Is this the type of life I want to live?” She had BIG dreams. She left her home, and started a new life in Jakarta as she trained to be an athlete, graduated from University, and supported her sisters’ education in the process. Years later, she is a celebrated gold medalist national athlete. What is not visible between all these accomplishments are all the life challenges and failures after failures that she had to endure, which makes her stronger. Just like a saying in Odekta’s native Batak language: ““Sassittongna, molo dipahabisho jatah gagalmu, olo dang olo ho ikkon hasea” which means “In fact, when you used up your share of failures, there is only success in the end”. Episode 01 PASSION: Art Therapy Directed by Piet Kalalo Sengkey Monty P. Satiadarma is the first art therapist in Indonesia. Until recently, he has been the only Indonesian art therapist with a background in clinical psychology. Art therapy is a therapeutic method which utilizes art activities. Although the term “art” consists of various art modalities, art therapy focuses more on the visual arts. In practice, however, an art therapist may combine visual art with music, dance or movement, and other forms. Art therapy is a specific area of education, separate from art education in general, although as a therapist one must learn to use various artistic mediums and must able to produce works of art. In art education a student learns various aspects of creating art, including exploring the history of art and how to create artistic works. In art therapy, the emphasis is on how to utilize a particular visual art as a therapeutic device to assist a person in improving his or her well being. Therefore, in art therapy, one must learn to diagnose a symptom and to utilize a medium and activity to deal with the symptom. For example, drawing or painting a self-portrait is used to help a person explore self-awareness, similar to the way a person recognizes him or herself by looking in a mirror. Another example is utilizing simple weaving activities which can help many elderly people express their aesthetic sense while also giving them something productive to do work on in their leisure. In cases involving children, an art therapist can help children develop their creative potential by expressing their perceptions visually. An art therapist is trained to utilize a child’s drawing as an assessment instrument to evaluate a child’s level of development. When applying art therapy as a therapeutic device it is common for many people to be defensive and unwilling to draw or paint because they are afraid the results will be far below their expectations. The task of an art therapist is giving support and encouraging people to feel secure in expressing their thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism. A perfect work of art is not the main emphasis in art therapy as it is in the fine arts, instead it is the way a person completes act of creating artwork that is of importance as it is a reflection of how that person is coping and processing. Art therapy provides a secure atmosphere for many people because there is no right nor wrong in creating art. People have freedom to create tangible forms from their imagination and perception. An art therapist assists in the manifestation of the artwork and that it meets its creator’s expectations. Therefore, an art therapist must be similar in skill to a professional artist in order to help people realize their artistic vision. Being an art therapist is a unique profession – it is one part therapist and another part artist, both parts being vital in helping people improve the quality of their lives and expressing themselves in visual form.
